Regulatory Compliance for Facilities (under AEP and AER)

Alberta facilities are regulated by the provincial government. As of October 1, 2014, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) became responsible for the environmental assessment process for energy resources activity. This was previously managed through Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP), which continues to be responsible for all the assessments related to non-energy resources activities.

An environmental assessment process is required for facilities where the complexity and scale of a proposed activity creates uncertainty about the potential environmental impacts. While the assessment follows the same systematic principle of environmental site assessments, submissions also require comprehensive risk management plans and site specific liability assessments in order to evaluate the potential consequences and financial liabilities of the proposed activity. Once functional, the facility may require constant monitoring, status updates or remediation.
