Alberta Makes Radon Testing a Licensing Requirement for Child Care Facilities
Bill 209, also known as Radon Awareness and Testing Act, was passed in Alberta in December 2017. It requires the government to develop educational materials explaining the health risks associated with radon exposure, which is the second highest cause of lung cancer. The Bill also makes radon testing and mitigation a condition of issuing a new or renewing an existing license for a child care facility; this condition comes into force in the summer of 2019.
Tank Site Remediation Program Closure
Alberta Municipal Affairs’ Underground Petroleum Storage Tank Site Remediation Program which offered funding for removal of old storage tanks will be officially closed as of February 28th, 2018.
New 2016 CCME Regulation
In order to provide standardized guidance The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment issued The Guidance Manual for Environmental Site Characterization in Support of Environmental and Human Health Risk Assessment in 2016. Alberta Environment and Parks adopted the new analytical methods requirements for compliance with the Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines starting with March 1, 2017.
